The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom has a comprehensive portfolio of liberalism-based political education offerings in Germany and other countries. We want to encourage citizens to actively engage with political issues through our events and publications. In the past year the Foundation faced enormous challenges in its education projects and other activities. In March, when the first lockdown of the pandemic was imposed, we cancelled all of our presence events and activities, switching over to mobile services and a comprehensive range of digital education offerings within the space of a week. This was an impressive achievement in terms of both logistics and scope. The Foundation’s employees in Germany and other countries have demonstrated that, even in a pandemic, political education work can reach a lot of people. Over 113,000 citizens took part in our events in Germany in 2020.

New digital, hybrid and innovative formats have emerged, such as web talks, virtual conferences, drive-in cinemas, garden events and guided tours – all subject to strict hygiene regulations. Major public events in 2020, such as the Speech on Freedom and the Freedom Award, were held as virtual events for wide-reaching audiences. The majority of our digital content is stored in our central online media library, +Freiheit. Live streams of events as well as recordings, podcasts and training videos can all be found at plus.freiheit.org.

In a time of physical distancing and contact restrictions, this digital content has become established as an important independent source of information. ‘Let’s get digital’ will continue to be the central motto for the Foundation’s work in 2021. Find out more about our highlights in 2020.
